What is a meme...

( A fairly long winded explanation of the 'meme' ) [thanks to wombat]

A book called "The Selfish Gene", written in the 1980s by Richard Dawkins, where he describes the gene as a transport module for information and then goes on to the idea of a 'meme' (term he created for the book) which was another method of transporting ideas and beliefs. The book was actually quite interesting, although IIRC had a fair few flaws, it was a total atheist that got me to read it, but I was less than convinced by it.

I must admit I was surprised at the number of people who know where the word came from. (Hmmmm is the word 'meme' a meme in its self?)
