This was just too amusing to keep to myself. Where do people get these ideas from?

Dear Sir,
I am delighted to advise you that Brentwood Theatre has "re-launched" our website with a new address as follows:-

www.brentwood-theatre.org

And our emails can now be sent to

****************

This is as we believe that .org properly reflects our status as an independent community theatre, and the shorter address is easier to remember!.

We currently have a link from our website to your one and I have been advised that, for copyright reasons, you should reciprocate however having looked at your site I cannot see anywhere that would be suitable so may I therefore please ask you to simply acknowledge the above?

I must admit I am intregued by this statement. As far as I am aware there
are no such provisions under copyright law. All you are doing is pointing
people at data that is being published by another source, you are not
duplicating it, which would be covered by copyright law. However,
thank-you for the information. We have no problems with people linking to
our site, and in fact many people do so.

If you have information to the contrary of what I've just said I would be
most interested to hear it, and the basis of it.

Dear Mark

Yes it was news to me too but on a business course recently this
idea/suggestion was raised. The course was run by Welcome Management
through Essex Tourism Association.

Thank you for your reply

Mark

If this poor guy hasn't managed to get the wrong end of the stick, then "Welcome Management" are spouting so much cr*p I'm surprised that anyone can survive living within a 100 mile radius.

To put it simply, unless you've managed to get the wrong end of the stick,
Welcome Management are spouting rubbish. By using simply a link, all you
are doing is telling people to go and fetch information from somewhere
else, the equivalant of telling people to go and read chapter 5 from a
book. At no point are you publishing information that another party holds
copyright on, otherwise a site like google, who literally publish links to
billions of web pages, would be in a very sticky position.

The only time you need to consider copyright is when you are using
<img src="...."> and linking to their images, which could make their
content look like yours, and possibly stand some chance of infringing
copyright. When linking to images it is generally considered polite to
ask the permission of the people who run the site, since it places an
extra load on their servers without them getting people going to their
site and generating whatever form of buisness the owners are looking for.

Regards,

Mark
